Join our webinar on Climate Risk Assessment and explore why climate risks are becoming increasingly important in our ever-changing world. Why do climate risks matter so? There are many reasons, but one of the clearest examples is the accelerating loss of sea ice. Register Here
Antarctic sea ice defied global warming for decades. That has now changed.
For decades, Antarctica seemed to defy global warming. Since we began monitoring the poles in the late 1970s with satelites, the seasonal growth and retreat of Antarctic sea ice—frozen seawater that expands around the continent each winter—appeared remarkably resilient. It was often described as the “heartbeat of the planet.”
Unlike the Arctic, where sea ice declined rapidly as the planet warmed, Antarctic sea ice showed little overall loss. It even expanded between 2007 and 2015. But that resilience has now been lost.
Since 2015, Antarctic sea ice has declined rapidly. In 2023, winter sea ice extent fell to record lows — far below the long-term average — leading scientists to describe it as an event with an estimated probability of just one in 3.5 million of occurring by chance alone.
Antarctica was long considered one of the parts of the climate system expected to change slowly. The rapid pace of recent sea ice decline has therefore come as a surprise.

Leadership & Sustainability (L&S) is a Worldly premium consultant partner and together with Worldly we will discuss our respective climate risks assessment tools: L&S Climate risk assessment aligned with materiality assessment methodology and Worldly’s Axion tool. Axion combines a company’s supply chain data with over 30 global risk and market datasets. L&S tool supports brands, retailers and suppliers to understand the climate risks and opportunities, their financial impacts and the related time horizon.
Join Karin Ekberg, Leadership & Sustainability, and Kaytlin Moeller, Worldly, for an exciting conversation about climate risk.
